Commvault Expands Threat Scan with Inline File Hashing for Faster, Cleaner Data Recovery

 Commvault has unveiled new inline scanning capabilities that aim to simplify cyber recovery by enabling organisations to quickly determine whether backup data is safe to restore after a cyberattack.

The new capability collects file hashes during backup operations, allowing recovery teams to rapidly compare protected data against known threat intelligence indicators without performing full forensic analysis on every backup.

Because file hashes act as unique digital fingerprints, organisations can efficiently identify compromised files and locate clean recovery points before restoration begins.

Commvault’s layered approach allows customers to begin with rapid threat intelligence validation before selectively performing deeper malware, ransomware and forensic analysis only where additional inspection is required.

The company says this approach reduces the time needed to validate backups while maintaining confidence in the integrity of recovered data.

The inline scanning enhancements also strengthen Commvault’s AI-powered Synthetic Recovery capability, which automatically detects malicious content during recovery and removes infected data while preserving unaffected files.

Rather than restoring an entire compromised backup, organisations can recover only clean data, helping reduce downtime and improve business continuity following a cyber incident.

The new scanning capabilities form part of Commvault’s broader strategy to strengthen cyber resilience through automation, intelligence-driven recovery and AI-powered protection.
