For cloud developers, S3 has become the default storage layer for modern applications, analytics platforms, and AI pipelines. While S3 offers scale and flexibility, protecting that data in a way that meets enterprise resilience and compliance requirements has remained a persistent challenge.
Commvault’s new Unified Data Vault aims to close that gap by giving developers a simple, agentless way to bring immutability, encryption, and governance to S3-based data.
Instead of installing backup agents or building custom protection workflows, developers can write directly to a Commvault-managed S3-compatible endpoint. From the moment data is ingested, Unified Data Vault applies deduplication, encryption, immutable storage, and policy-based retention using the same S3 APIs developers already know.

At the same time, Unified Data Vault provides centralised policy governance for IT and security teams, ensuring consistent compliance controls across clouds, regions, and workloads without slowing down development teams.
According to IDC, the approach strikes a balance between developer agility and enterprise resilience. “Unified Data Vault extends automation, immutability, and air-gap protection to S3 data in a way that is easy for developers to use, while giving SecOps and IT teams confidence that resilience is built in,” said Archana Venkatraman, Senior Research Director at IDC.
