Security technology company PMT Security Systems is ramping up its investment in New Zealand after securing an early foothold with a major national retail project.
The Australian-founded integrator has opened an Auckland office and joined the New Zealand Security Association as it looks to build a permanent local operation and expand into commercial and critical infrastructure markets.
PMT’s move follows the appointment of Deb Perano as Country Manager for New Zealand earlier this year and the completion of a significant security rollout for one of the country’s leading national retailers.
While the retailer has not been identified, PMT says the project has helped provide a platform for further expansion, with its New Zealand portfolio now extending across retail, commercial and critical infrastructure customers.
CEO Adrian Smith said PMT’s strategy was to invest in local capability rather than attempt to service New Zealand entirely through its Australian operations.
“An in-house team and now office in New Zealand has been a natural extension of PMT’s business and an important part of our growth strategy,” Smith said.
“Securing a major national retail project in early 2026 was an important endorsement of that strategy. It demonstrates that there is strong demand for a security integration partner that can combine local service and accountability with the ability to deliver sophisticated technology consistently across large, multi-site environments.”
The new office at Eden Terrace in Auckland will house PMT’s growing New Zealand team and provide a base for project management, technical services and customer engagement.
Leading the operation is Perano, who brings two decades of senior retail experience across Australia and New Zealand.
Her previous roles included Group Head of Loss Prevention and Head of Operations in New Zealand, giving her experience across security, risk, loss prevention and large-scale retail operations.
Perano said her experience as a customer of security technology had shaped PMT’s approach to the New Zealand market.
“Having spent much of my career on the customer side of large-scale retail operations, I understand the importance of security technology delivering tangible operational outcomes rather than simply being a collection of products,” she said.
PMT is targeting organisations operating complex facilities and distributed networks, where security systems increasingly need to integrate video surveillance, access control, identity technology, networking, analytics and communications.
Perano said the company had progressed rapidly since establishing its initial presence.
“In just six months we’ve moved from a single flagship project to a growing portfolio spanning retail, commercial and critical infrastructure and the Auckland office lets us scale more efficiently across the country.”
The company has also joined the New Zealand Security Association, which represents security providers and professionals nationally.
Smith said the membership reflected PMT’s intention to become part of the local industry rather than simply expand its Australian business across the Tasman.
“We want PMT to become an active member of the New Zealand security community, developing local talent and partnerships while sharing the experience we’ve gained delivering some of Australia’s largest and most complex security projects,” he said.
Established in 1979, PMT has operations across Australia and provides security and communications technology to customers in retail, property, logistics, data centres, critical infrastructure and government.
