Why Security Leaders Must Prioritise Visibility In The Hybrid Cloud

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally reshaping the security landscape, transforming how cyber threats emerge, evolve and exploit vulnerabilities. Gigamon’s 2025 Hybrid Cloud Security Survey makes one thing very clear: security leaders are recalibrating their strategies to survive in this Ai-driven era.

Ai Is Driving A New Wave Of Complexity – And Compromise

According to the survey of more than 1,000 security and IT leaders, 91 per cent are reevaluating their hybrid cloud security strategies. The reason? Ai has significantly raised the stakes. In Australia, breach rates have spiked to 53 per cent, which is a 17 per cent year-on-year increase. Ai-generated threats are playing a leading role.

Ai workloads are pushing data volumes through the roof. One in three organisations report that network data has more than doubled in the past two years. More than half of Australian respondents have seen a rise in attacks targeting their internal large language models. These are not just random attempts – they are precise, persistent and powered by machine learning.

The rise of Ai-powered ransomware is another trend. In 2025, 58 per cent of organisations reported such attacks, up from 41 per cent in 2024. The speed and scale of these Ai-enabled threats have left traditional defences behind.

Rethinking The Role Of Public Cloud

Once a cornerstone of digital transformation, the public cloud is now under more scrutiny. The survey found that 70 per cent of security leaders see the public cloud as a greater risk than any other environment. A similar number are actively considering moving data back to private clouds.

This shift is not about reversing innovation – it is about regaining control. Public cloud environments often lack the granular governance and visibility needed to protect high-value Ai workloads and sensitive data. With 54 per cent of security leaders hesitant to deploy Ai in public cloud settings due to concerns about intellectual property protection, organisations are becoming more selective about where and how they build Ai capabilities.

Visibility: The Foundation Of Modern Cybersecurity

The limitations of traditional tools are being exposed. More than half (55 per cent) of respondents expressed a lack of confidence in their existing systems to detect breaches. Sixty-four per cent say their top priority over the next year is achieving real-time threat monitoring. The unifying challenge? Limited visibility.

In a world where Ai enables faster and stealthier threats, visibility is not just helpful – it is essential. Lateral movement, especially in East-West traffic within hybrid environments, remains one of the most exploited blind spots. Without insight into data in motion, security teams are flying blind.

Deep Observability Is Now A Boardroom Priority

Enter deep observability. By combining machine, event, log and trace data with network-derived telemetry such as packets, flows and metadata, deep observability enables organisations to monitor all data in motion across hybrid environments. Nearly 90 per cent of survey respondents cite it as fundamental to securing the hybrid cloud, and 83 per cent of Australian organisations report it is now a board-level conversation.

Balancing Innovation With Risk

Security leaders are under pressure to embrace innovation without increasing risk exposure. Ai is here to stay, and its benefits are too valuable to ignore. But that does not mean rushing ahead blindly. Well-prepared CISOs are implementing guardrails: limiting public Ai usage, securing internal language models and automating security operations where it makes sense.

Ai is not just another trend – it is a tectonic shift. Like any seismic event, it will leave winners and losers in its wake. Those who gain complete visibility, who can see threats before they strike, will lead the charge in a safer, smarter hybrid cloud future.

The core message from Gigamon’s 2025 report is sobering but direct: visibility is no longer a technical concern – it is a strategic imperative. As Ai accelerates both innovation and threat complexity, only those organisations that invest in deep observability will be ready to meet the moment.
